Capoeira Starts Thursday!!
Join us Thursday 9-10am for our first official Capoeira class. We will be meeting every week and on Sat afternoon (tbd for some Saturdays) to learn the exciting style of Capoeira with Steve Williams. We are very excited to be able to offer these special classes to all academy members so come join us.
Capoeira is an art form created in Brazil that combines elements of martial arts, music, and dance. Participants form a circle, and take turns either playing musical instruments, singing, or ritually sparring in pairs in the center of a circle. The sparring is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, and extensive use of sweeps, kicks, and headbutts. It’s origins and purpose are a matter of debate, with theories ranging from views of Capoeira as a uniquely Brazilian folk dance with improvised fighting movements to claims that it is a battle-ready fighting form directly descended from ancient African techniques.
Steve Williams (known as Cabeca de Coco) began his Capoeira training in 2002 with Mestre Batata of Capoeira Besouro Los Angeles, and is one of five Instructors from the Los Angeles/Santa Monica based group. He has been teaching Capoeira for approximately 3 years, and was promoted to the rank of Instructor in June of 2009 by Mestre Batata, a prominent figure in the Capoeira community. He also currently teaches weekday Capoeira classes at the Claremont Colleges along with another Instructor from Capoeira Besouro.
